DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The Department of Chemistry was set up at the inception of the college and was affiliated to Bombay University and later to Goa University since 1986. The first head of Department was the Principal , Dr.Y.V.Lawande..
The Department is actively involved in collaborative research programme with Department of Atomic Energy, Bombay and has a tie up with National Institute of Oceanography for student related project activities as well as for conducting seminars, workshops, conferences for students, teachers and for public awareness.
The Department has a very active Chromophore Club. The club conducts activities like, invited guest lectures, Quiz, seminar by students, essay and poster competitions industry visit, heritage tour etc. The club also comes out with a yearly bulletin ‘Chromophore’.
In past the department conducted course on ‘Nutrition for body and mind’ for staff and students of the college. The resource persons were renowned nutritionist from the state and ayurvedic doctors.
Another course conducted by the department was ‘Ayurvedic Preparations’ of oils, creams, packsand herbal tea and syrups. The resource person was Dr.Aditya Samant from Ayurvedic College, Shiroda Goa.

The Department has successfully completed one major research project entitled “ Synthesis and characterization of Pyrochlore materials ” funded by UGC –DAE-CSR.The Principal Investigator was Dr Mrs. Vrinda Borkar and student Investigator was Ms Rajashree Karmali .
Another major project entitled “Environmental impact assessment of ground water quality of Mhadei River Basin with respect to microbiological, chemical and geological parameters” has been sanctioned by the UGC wherein one departmental staff member Mrs Varsha Virginkar is the co- investigator.
The research cell of the Department has two publications

  • Synthesis and structure of tris (acetylacetonato) aluminium III –authored by Manisha Shirodker, Vrinda Borkar, Nather ,W Bensch and K.S Rane in Indian Journal of chemistry -2010.
  • Bactericidal Action of N doped ZnO in sunlight –authored by Rajashree S. Karmali, Amruta Bartakke, Vrinda Borkar, and K.S. Rane in Biointerface Research in Chemistry, April, 2011.

The Department conducted one day Seminar on “Crystallography” on the 13th of Dec. 2010
where in the resource person was Dr Cora Lind –Associate professor –Toledo University –USA.

Activities:Chemistry exhibition was organized under ‘The Chromophore Club’ on 3rd of March 2016 from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm in the Department Of Chemistry. Dr Vrinda Borker coordinated the exhibition. Teachers, Miss Gauri Silimkhan and Akshata Naik also helped the students in displaying the exhibits. Some Physics projects were also on display. Students and teachers from Arts section as well as Science section of the College attended in large numbers. Students and faculty of T.B Cunha higher secondary and Dhempe Higher Secondary schools too attended the exhibition. The Principal and Vice Principals attended the exhibition.
Activities:Valedictory Function of Chromophore club was held on 23/3/2016. Dr Avinash Kamat Dhakankar delivered a talk on Health of Women. He distributed prizes to prize winners Chromophore Bulletin was also released on that day.

Personality Enhancement Programme

  1. Dr Vrinda Borker Organised lecture ‘ Health through Ayurveda’ by Dr. Archana Gaonker, Ayurvedic Doctor on 9th July, 2014 under Personality Development Programme for students of B.Sc. and staff. Dr Gaonker discussed the use of aloe vera and other herbs in daily life. She also mentioned the diet pattern for the participants.
  2. Poster Competition on “Chemistry in daily life “ as a part of personality enhancement programme was organized by Mrs Deepa M Audi of Chemistry Department on 14th January 2015 in the Chemistry lab from 11.15 to 12 noon.

The theme of the poster Competition was to make the students aware of the applications of Chemistry in different sectors of life, and to bring up the talents of students set apart from the daily teaching learning schedule.

   The students have shown a good response and the posters well depicted about the said topic.

   The student participants were as follows

Chromophore Club Farewell 2014-15

The farewell function of the chromophore club for T.Y.B.Sc Chemistry students was held on 17th March organised by the chromophore club of the Chemistry Department.

The Chief Guest for the function was Dr Kamlesh Pai Fondekar.

Present on the occasion were Vice Principal Prof.RamuMurthy;Office bearers of the Chromophore club:PresidentMr Vishwas Prabhudessai, Vice President Mrs Varsha Virginkar, Treasurer Mrs.Soniya Rao, teaching as well as non-teaching staff and student members of T.Y.B.Schemistry and S.Y. B.Sc students.

First, Dr (Mrs)Vrinda Borker gave a welcome speech and introduced to us the chief Guest.The Dignitaries were given a floral welcome.

Dr.Kamlesh Pai Fondekar took over the function, informing us about the Importance of Laboratory safety, chemical Management, chemical storage, Handling of chemicals, control Measures,Disposal of Chemical waste and so on. Also enlightened the students with scope in the field of chemistry in Pharmaceuticals etc.

Mrs Varsha Virginkar informed about the various activities held under the chromophore club for Academic Year 2014-15.Also,as token of appreciation students of T.Y.B.Sc chemistry were given prizes for the presentation of project held on 5/3/15 The best presenter award was given to Ms Saba Inamdar.MsFaznulbiHawaldar was selected for oral presentation and Ms RasmiMorajkar for poster presentation to be sent to Intercollegiate chemistry symposium to be held at Goa University.

Also students of F.Y.B.Sc and S.Y.B.Sc were given prizes for Poster Competition.

The Chromophore bulletin for year 2014-15 of chromophore club was released.The editor of bulletin was Dr V.P.S.Borker. Neha Mesta and Ankita Pal students of S.Y.BSc. were in editorial Board.

Ms RasmiMorajkar, student Secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
