The Department of Biotechnology came into existence in the year 1997 and was one of the pioneers in Biotechnology in Goa. Within a short period of 15 years, it has grown into a vibrant and inspirational entity which has set high yet achievable standards for students.

The coursework of the B.Sc. Biotechnology programme lays substantial emphasis on Hands-on training and the development of soft skills which gives the students a definite advantage. While Biotechnology is fundamentally based on knowledge of biological sciences, it is also supported by Biochemistry, Statistics and Information Technology. The students are exposed to many cutting-edge techniques and use of sophisticated instruments. The FY and SY Biotechnology students are offered Zoology and Chemistry subject combination. In the final year, the students are offered all papers in Biotechnology (6 units) which include a dissertation / project based on a variety of investigatory topics. These are often conducted in association with R&D divisions of industries and higher research organizations such as NIO, ICAR, etc.

Focusing on academic excellence as well as personality enrichment of the students, the department conducts regular seminars, workshops and guest lectures by eminent scientists and entrepreneurs in the field. Students of Biotechnology are encouraged to undergo ‘on the job training’ in industries and research organizations during the summer vacation. The training and experience acquired at the workplace is a valuable addition to their biodata

The Department is comprised of a team of devoted teachers with academic excellence and research experience obtained both from India and Europe. Currently we are offering several Non-Conventional courses and seminars to broaden knowledge base of the students. Our current focus is on increasing the research output of the Department via research projects which include enzyme-based biochemistry as well as plant and animal tissue culture. The department has a well equipped laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, a departmental library, e-books, a book-bank and internet facility for students. The department also maintains a greenhouse and a vermicomposting unit.

All Biotechnology students by default belong to the Biotechnology Club – ‘OPERON’ which is run by the students and for the students. Regular meetings of ‘OPERON’ are held on every Wednesday. The club focuses on the overall development of students which includes lateral thinking.

Details of Value Addition courses:
Name: Advanced Immunology (Enrichment Programme)
Duration: 1 year
Significance of Course: This certificate course was conducted for the students of Biotechnology by the Department of Biotechnology in collaboration with Dr. SrinivasKaveri, Director of INSERM, France in the academic year 2015-16. Online lecture sessions were conducted by Dr. SrinivasKaveri to discuss advanced concepts in Immunology from research point of view. Mrs. Mrunal R. Phadke, Asst. Prof. of Biotechnology, also conducted some lectures for the students.
Name: Food Science and Quality Control(certificate course)
Duration: 2 months
Significance of Course: The department of Biotechnology has started a certificate course in Food Science and Quality Control. The syllabus for the course is designed to understand the current Industry trends in terms of Quality Control. The course includes detailed information about the Methodologies in support of the quality management in the food industry such as sensory evaluation, adulteration tests, food safety standards, the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), the system Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP),etc.
Name: First aid(certificate course)
Duration: 2 months
Significance of Course: The department of Biotechnology will be starting a certificate course in First aid. This non-conventional course on First aid will enable students to deal with an emergency situation in an ideal manner. This course will also help in clearing mis-norms and misconceptions that one tends to do in a critical situation. On completion of the course, students would be in a better position to deal in a rational way in case of fall, snake bite, burn, poisoning, etc. Preparation of a first aid kit, practical demonstrations on bandaging and splint making and finally a lecture by a practicing doctor from GMC will also be included in this course.
