DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The Department of Geology was established in June 1963 in the present institution by Prof.Frank B. Antao who headed the department till 1998. Some of the senior teacher who have served this department include Prof.A.M.Nadkarni, Prof.R.P.Gurav, (both of them retired) Prof.A.G.Agshikar,Prof.D.S.Parab, Prof. M.M.Ibrampurkar who are currently senior teachers in the Department while the Department lost a dynamic teacher Prof.O.A.Fernandes. who suddenly expired to 27th July 2008 at the age of 46 after serving the department for 23 years.

The Department of Geology has a Geological โ€œMuseumโ€ with a massive collection of rocks, minerals and fossil specimens. The Department is the headquarters of the โ€œGeological Society of Goaโ€.
The Department was first to conduct the non-conventional course in โ€œRemote Sensing and GISโ€ which was started in June 2000. The Department has also conducted โ€œOrientation workshop in Geology for the School Teachersโ€ in collaboration with state Institution of Education. The department presently conducts a Non-Conventional Course in “Applications of Remote Sensing And Areal Photography in Geology”.

The past pupils of this Departments have instituted a Gold medal in honour of the founder Prof.F.B.Antao at Goa University and is awarded to the student topping M.Sc. Part II Examination in Earth science every year. An endowment scholarship has been instituted in this college for the student sopping B.Sc.in Geology Prof. A.G.Agshikar has instituted a scholarship in memory of his late parents and is awarded to the S.Y.B.Sc. student scoring highest marks in Geology and continuing with major in T.Y.B.Sc.

The Department caters to the needs of the students by issuing Geology books from the department library, Ex-staff member like Prof.R.P.Gurav. late Prof.O.A.Fernandes have donated many books which are being frequently referred.

Teaching in Geology is not confined only to the four walls of the Class rooms but the staff members take the students out to visit different areas in the state as well the neighboring states to become familiar with different geological aspect. Conducting field trip is mandatory part of our curriculum.

Our department staff Prof.D.S.Parab and Dr.M.M.Ibrampurkar has qualified SET while Prof.M.M Mayekar has qualified NET. Dr.M.M.Ibrapurkar has Completed PhD at Earth Science Department, Goa University in Nov 2012. The department has been performing exceedingly well in T.Y.B.Sc. Examination conducted by Goa University securing 100% results. Our students Mr.Tukaram Parab (2006), Miss Yogita Bakhale (2007), Miss Shilpa Khandolkar (2008),Ms. Shruti Bandaru(2009 -10), Ms. Nessa Dโ€™Mello(2010 -11), Mr.Paritosh Raut(2011 โ€“ 12), Ms. Shweta Shekhar(2012 โ€“ 13), Ms. Nicole Sequeira(2013 โ€“ 14) and Ms. Reshma Mandrekar(2014 – 15) have secured 1st rank in Geology at Goa University.

Besides academics all the faculty members of these departments are actively associated with extra curricular activities conducted by the College.

OPPORTUNITIES IN GEOLOGY
Geology is the study of the Earth. It deals with the materials, processes, systems and resources of the Earth. It is the core discipline of Earth Science and is used in the exploration of minerals, metals and energy resources. A career in Geology is both exciting and demanding. The subject offers job opportunities in various important fields such as Oil Explorations and production, Mining Industry, Hydrology Seismology, Volcanology, Marine Geology, Structural Geology and Remote Sensing etc.

After successful completion of B.Sc in Geology a student can opt for higher studies like M.Sc. (offered at the Goa University or any other University in India or abroad) and M.Tech ( at IITโ€™S ) or chose specialized course like Petroleum Geology (Pune), Mining Geology (Dhanbad), Gemmology (at Mumbai or Jaipur), Remote Sensing (at Dehradun) etc. Government agencies such as Geological survey of India and Central Ground water Board are the largest employers of Geologist in India.

Our students are employed in leading Oil producing MNCs such as Schlumberger, Shell, Baker, Hughes, Reliance, ONGC etc while other have joined leading Mining companies like Sesa Goa, Salgaocars, NMDC, CIL, etc. A few are working in Research institution like NIO, DST & E, NCAOR yet others have joined teaching profession.
