The department came into existence along with establishment of Dhempe College in the year1961. Since then it is in the forefront of the college in every sphere of activity, be it academics, research, extension services and extracurricular activities. It is also instrumental in setting Biotechnology laboratory of the college. The department conducted two non-conventional courses, “Landscape Gardening” and “Environmental Monitoring”.
Teachers have taken keen interest in authoring/editing books for undergraduates and graduates. The departmental library is well stocked with important books for reference by staff and students as well.
The department has completed two major research projects funded by Department of Environment and Forest, Government of India. The faculty has published fifteen research papers and three technical reports. Staff has equal number of presentations at national seminars.
The staff are members of many professional bodies such as court and academic council of Goa University, board of studies in Botany and Biotechnology of Goa University and Agri-based courses of Goa Board, founder members of Botanical Society of Goa, Environmental Protection Council, Government of Goa and executive member of World Wide Fund For Nature –Goa
The faculty members have extended their services as NCC Officers, NSS Programme Officers and IGNOU Assistant Coordinator and also take active part in extracurricular activities of the college.
Other institutions such as Goa University, Home Science College, Nursing College, IGNOU, and Pharmacy College have utilized the expertise of our staff. They are also invited as resource persons for Academic Staff College of Goa University, high schools, higher secondary schools and Navodaya Leadership Institute, Goa. They also take part in extension services such as radio and TV programs and conduct environment related quiz programs.
The department has organized a workshop for school teachers on “Environmental education”, National seminar on “Recent Trends in Botany with reference to Biodiversity and Endangered Species”, National symposium on “Ocean: Its Resources, Importance and Environment”, and two National Conferences on “Eco-restoration of Derelict Mined Lands” and “Sustainable Management of Agriculture – Changing Scenario in 21st Century”
The teachers regularly attend state, national and international seminars and conferences to update their knowledge. Mrs. Manjiri Barve and Mrs. Mangala Prabhudesai completed their M.Phil and Ph.D respectively under the guidance of Dr. K.G.Hiremath.

Name: Certificate Course on “Collection, Isolation and Identification of microfungi”
Duration: 5 days
Significance of Course: Fungi are nature’s decomposers/regenerators and an important source of protein, food and medicines critical for your health and the health of the planet. The five day certificate course conducted by Dr. Maria A. D’Souza, is designed to introduce students to a basic understanding of microfungi such as moulds that may occur in foods and in environments. The participants will be given to examine and explore different habitats of microfungi. The focus will be on collection, isolation and identification techniques of microfungi with many hands-on activities in addition to the knowledge, skills and confidence gained in the fungal isolation/identification. This will be a fun packed informative hands-on practical exercise totally consuming your hearts, minds and hands with microfungi.
