BOTANY DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The department came into existence along with establishment of Dhempe College in the year 1962. Since then it is in the forefront of the college in every sphere of activity, be it academics, research, extension services and extracurricular activities.Teachers have taken keen interest in authoring/editing books for undergraduates and graduates. The departmental library is well stocked with important books for reference by staff and students as well.

The department has completed three major research projects, two of them funded by Department of Environment and Forest, Government of India and one funded by Department of Science & Technology Government of India, New Delhi. The faculty has published sixteen research papers and three technical reports. Staff has equal number of presentations at national seminars/ conferences.

The faculty are members of professional bodies such as Board of Studies in Botany of Goa University, members of Botanical Society of Goa, member of Mangrove Society of India, expert in various committees of Goa Biodiversity Board, Government of Goa.The faculty members have extended their services as NCC Officers, NSS Program Officers and IGNOU Assistant Coordinator and also take active part in extracurricular activities of the college.Other institutions such as Goa University, Home Science College and Nursing College have utilized the expertise of our staff in the past. Our staff render their expertise to IGNOU and Pharmacy College They are invited as resource persons and judges in various institutes and within the college.

So far the department has organized a workshop for school teachers on โ€œEnvironmental educationโ€, National seminar on โ€œRecent Trends in Botany with reference to Biodiversity and Endangered Speciesโ€, National symposium on โ€œOcean: Its Resources, Importance and Environmentโ€, and two National Conferences on โ€œEco-restoration of Derelict Mined Landsโ€ and โ€œSustainable Management of Agriculture โ€“ Changing Scenario in 21st Centuryโ€. During this academic year the department organized a two-day workshop on โ€œProspects of export of vegetables produced by Goan farmersโ€ on 27th and 28th August 2018. 100 farmers and 100 students attended the workshop.

The teachers and students regularly attend state, national and international seminars and conferences to update their knowledge. They also present research papers and posters at international and national seminars, conferences, etc. Students participate in various intercollegiate activities.

Name: Certificate Course on โ€œCollection, Isolation and Identification of microfungiโ€
Duration: 5 days
Significance of Course: Fungi are natureโ€™s decomposers/regenerators and an important source of protein, food and medicines critical for your health and the health of the planet. The five day certificate course conducted by Dr. Maria A. Dโ€™Souza, is designed to introduce students to a basic understanding of microfungi such as moulds that may occur in foods and in environments. The participants will be given to examine and explore different habitats of microfungi. The focus will be on collection, isolation and identification techniques of microfungi with many hands-on activities in addition to the knowledge, skills and confidence gained in the fungal isolation/identification. This will be a fun packed informative hands-on practical exercise totally consuming your hearts, minds and hands with microfungi.
