DEPARTMENT PROFILE

“It’s in literature that true life can be found. It’s under the mask of fiction that you can tell the truth.” – Gao Xingjian.

One of the premier departments of Dhempe College, the Department of English strives to make learning of language and literature a meaningful experience. While imparting syllabi recommended by Goa University that ranges from culture studies to criticism, the Department also hosts a variety of clubs and associations to enrich students’ experiences. An active Literary Association, Communication Club and Movie Club offer students opportunities to explore their talents. Apart from organizing intra-college activities for students, in 2012-13 the Department organised an intercollegiate literary and media event, ‘Illuminations’. Renowned writers and journalists were invited to interact with students during the course of this event. In 2013-14, the Department organised an ICCR-Sponsored Bridge Course in Language Learning and Enhancement for ICCR scholars from different colleges of Goa. The faculty is actively involved in research and has undertaken Minor Research Projects, presented papers at International and National Conferences and published papers in peer-reviewed journals. In March 2014, the Department organised a Two-Day UGC-Sponsored National Conference entitled, “Mapping the Matrix of Contemporary Indian Literature in English”.
